Entertaining combo of vulgar and heartwarming!
PLOT
A 40-year-old Guy Trilby (Jason Bateman) finds a loophole and attempt to win the Golden Quill spelling bee as an adult. Along the way, his friend reporter Jenny (Kathryn Hahn) wants to get his story. While parents are furious how come he's allow competing, we are more and more interested in why Guy wants to win the bee so badly. He also starts to hang out with a young contestant Chaitanya Chopra (Rohan Chand) whom he exposes to the wilder side of life, while learning a little about himself.
REVIEW
Nice directorial debut from Jason who also stars in the film. And he's great (again)! Together with his co-star, young Rohan they did a wonderful job. Jason's character is kind of an as*hole when dealing with small children but he pulled off the near impossible task of being a jerk while keeping the tone funny rather than offensive. And you care about him and what will happen next. I found the bond betweeen Jason and Rohan funny, not creepy. When it comes to plot, there is nothing too special but still a fine interesting story. It's sweet and unexpectedly dark comedy with some inappropriate interactions. If you are easily offended you might be shocked or uncomfortable on several occasions but it's just shamelessly funny film and more than a rude comedy. Unfortunately I got the feeling there is a lack of understanding in the language of this film. I leave it to your judgement but for me was one of the better comedies I have seen this year and think it is really enjoyable refreshing flick! 4/5
