Movie review - Side Effects (2013)

Side Effects (2013) / psychological thriller, drama, crime

Directed by Steven Soderbergh
Written by Scott Z. Burns
Starring: Jude Law, Rooney Mara, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Channing Tatum, Vinessa Shaw, Ann Dowd, Polly Draper
Trailer: click.

Film focus on young woman Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) who suffers from depression. After unsuccessful suicide attempt she is assigned to visit psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Banks (Jude Law). Together they try to find antidepressant drugs that will suit for her with less side effects. Meanwhile Emily's husband Martin (Channing Tatum) is released out of prison and Dr. Banks explore more about her mental state with a help of ex-psychiatrist Dr. Victoria Siebert (Catherine Zeta-Jones). He finds out there is more to the story... I'll finish here because I don't want to give too much away.

What's not to love bout psychological thrillers? You think you know what's happening, but you don't! And it's been a while since I saw a good one so I was really excited. Movie has good structure, storyline, complex characters and performances are great! Jude is a strong lead while Rooney is inocente, mysterious, unpredictable and twisted at the same time. And the moral and psychological behaviour of these characters would be interesting to discuss as well. My biggest and rare complaint is that at the begining there is way to much pill names and viewer can get a feeling you're watching pharmaceutical industry commercials not serious movie. Despite that, film is great, intense, dynamic from beginning to end, it pulls you in and I highly recommended it! 4/5
